Bob and Edgar met in 1934 and began to rescue 1840s-era stone and log cottages\, one at a time\, from demolition. The homes\, built by Cornish immigrants during the heyday of the lead mining era\, were given Cornish-language names by Bob and Edgar. The men lived on the grounds and opened a restaurant serving Cornish food to sustain their preservation efforts. Ringling Theatre in Baraboo\, Wisconsin\, United States\, opened its doors in November 1915. Designed by the architectural firm Rapp and Rapp\, it was built by Albert Ringling\, one of the circus Ringling Brothers\, for $100\,000. Over the years\, it has featured performances from vaudeville and silent movies to grand opera starring such notables as Lionel Barrymore and Mary Pickford.The design of the theatre is based on the Orpheum Theatre\, built by Rapp and Rapp in Champaign\, Illinois in 1914. The decor of the auditorium is said to have derived from Ange-Jacques Gabriel’s opera house of 1763-1770 in the Palace of Versailles but some believe it to be at least equally based on Victor Louis’s 1780 Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux. This made the 27-room Greek Revival hotel a popular resting point for weary travelers. Three generations of the Wade family resided on the Wade House property\, with the stagecoach inn operating until around 1872. The Kohler family and the Kohler Foundation purchased Wade House in 1950 and began a top-to-bottom restoration. The site became property of the Wisconsin Historical Society and opened to the public in 1953. Here\, visitors can journey back to the horse-powered world that existed before planes\, cars\, and trains. The site features the stagecoach hotel built and owned by Sylvanus and Betsey Wade\, early settlers of Greenbush\, as well as a blacksmith shop\, sawmill\, and the Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum\, which houses Wisconsin’s largest collection of carriages and wagons. Hercules L. Dousman began development of the site during the 1840s on the banks of the Mississippi River in Prairie du Chien. The property has since expanded into a 25-acre complex complete with historic structures and archaeological remains that reference the early history of the site. Upon the death of Hercules in 1868\, widow Jane Dousman and son H. Louis Dousman contracted Milwaukee architect E. Townsend Mix to build the stately mansion that now rests at the heart of the property.  In addition to the new residence\, H. Louis expanded the site to include a farm for breeding and racing horses.  After Louis’ death\, Nina Dousman raised their children at Villa Louis\, and the property remained under family ownership until it was given to the City of Prairie du Chien in 1935. In 1950\, Villa Louis became property of the Wisconsin Historical Society\, and opened to the public in 1952. Prior to Dousman ownership\, Indigenous natives lived on the Villa Louis grounds over 2000 years ago. For centuries\, Native Nations of the upper Mississippi gathered upon the island to trade among themselves until the fur trade brought French-speaking traders in contact with Indigenous tribesmen and women. The trade also attracted free Black settlers to Prairie du Chien. Additionally\, officers and agents of the United States brought enslaved men and women to the prairie\, some of whom lived at Fort Crawford and other structures that once stood on land that is now part of Villa Louis State Historic Site. Ringling Theatre in Baraboo\, Wisconsin\, United States\, opened its doors in November 1915. Designed by the architectural firm Rapp and Rapp\, it was built by Albert Ringling\, one of the circus Ringling Brothers\, for $100\,000. Over the years\, it has featured performances from vaudeville and silent movies to grand opera starring such notables as Lionel Barrymore and Mary Pickford.The design of the theatre is based on the Orpheum Theatre\, built by Rapp and Rapp in Champaign\, Illinois in 1914. This made the 27-room Greek Revival hotel a popular resting point for weary travelers. Three generations of the Wade family resided on the Wade House property\, with the stagecoach inn operating until around 1872. The Kohler family and the Kohler Foundation purchased Wade House in 1950 and began a top-to-bottom restoration. The site became property of the Wisconsin Historical Society and opened to the public in 1953. Here\, visitors can journey back to the horse-powered world that existed before planes\, cars\, and trains. The site features the stagecoach hotel built and owned by Sylvanus and Betsey Wade\, early settlers of Greenbush\, as well as a blacksmith shop\, sawmill\, and the Wesley W. Designed by the architectural firm Rapp and Rapp\, it was built by Albert Ringling\, one of the circus Ringling Brothers\, for $100\,000.
