SUMMARY:An Indigenous History of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Want to get involved in celebrating America 250?\n\n\n\nIndigenous people were central players in the American revolution. For instance\, Native nations were both allied and opposed to the Patriot’s cause. The Declaration of Independence cited Native people as one of the twenty seven reasons justifying the revolution. In fact\, Native nations offered the founders concrete inspiration for the democratic nature of the new United States. Despite this\, many histories of the nation’s founding still leave Native communities on the margin of the story. In this talk\, we’ll explore an Indigenous history of the American Revolution\, a story which has shaped the many nations which today call Wisconsin home. \n\n\n\nThis program is part of Beyond 250\, a series highlighting US history. Find the full program schedule at www.beyondthepage.info/beyond-250 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the presenter:\n\n\n\nMatt Villeneuve (Turtle Mountain Chippewa descent) is Assistant Professor of U.S. History and Native American and Indigenous Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \n\n\n\n\n\nNote: For hours and other admission information\, please contact the hosting venue. \n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n Add to calendar \n \n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Google Calendar \n \n \n \n iCalendar \n \n \n \n Outlook 365 \n \n \n \n Outlook Live \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nFind more events\, resources\, and opportunities to connect here: \n\n\n\n\nCelebrate the 250th – WisHistory\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: For hours and other admission information\, please contact the hosting venue. \n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n Add to calendar \n \n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Google Calendar \n \n \n \n iCalendar \n \n \n \n Outlook 365 \n \n \n \n Outlook Live

González presents Summer Harvests\, Lasting Legacies: Histories of Migrant Work in Door County’s Cherry Industry How did Door County become “America’s Cherryland”? Sergio M. González\, historian of U.S. immigration\, labor and religion at Marquette University dives deep beneath the sweet surface of Wisconsin’s cherry capital to explore how migrant workers from the Caribbean\, Mexico\, Texas and the American South transformed the peninsula during the mid-twentieth century to develop one of the most agriculturally prosperous regions in the Badger State. Discover how seasonal laborers’ lives\, cultures and struggles reshaped Door County into a far more diverse and interconnected place—and how we can continue to remember and reclaim cherry industry history by examining the experiences of those who built the peninsula as we know it.   Nov 10 – Lowell Brower presents Wisconsin Whoppers: Sensationalistic Storytelling\, Tal Tale Tourism\, and Cryptid Currency in the Badger State From folkloric “fish tales” to hodag hunts\, cryptid legends and more\, Wisconsin’s tall tale tourism history runs rampant with stories drenched in upper-Midwestern horror\, humor and wit. Join UW-Madison Folklore Program Teaching Faculty member—and former werewolf hunter—Lowell Brower as he explores how historic tall tale masters combined the arts of sensationalistic storytelling\, down-home humorism and seedy business acumen to draw attention\, money and notoriety to themselves and the state. Operating from the premise that local legends can’t help but reveal the values\, fears\, hopes and dreams of their transmitters\, Lowell will lead you on a journey to discover what the stories we tell end up telling us about ourselves.    Cost Free and open to the publicAdvanced registration is recommended   About the Location An active\, community-focused space that hosts school groups\, pop-up exhibits\, author talks\, public programs and more; located in the US Bank Building on Madison’s Capitol Square.  History Maker Space   U.S. Bank Plaza 1 S. SUMMARY:Susan Apps-Bodilly discusses Old Farm Country Cookbook
DESCRIPTION:Join author Susan Apps-Bodilly to discuss a collection of nostalgic recipes and stories co-written with her father\, Jerry Apps.\n\n\n\nReturn to an era when all food was local and farming was a family-run affair with Old Farm Country Cookbook\, written by Susan Apps-Bodilly and her father\, beloved storyteller Jerry Apps. They share the farm family food that only Jerry’s mother knew how to make in this warm-hearted\, memoir-style cookbook plucked right from Eleanor Apps’s Depression Era recipe box. Inspired by her dishes\, Jerry and Susan take us on a culinary tour of life on the farm during the Depression and World War II. Seasoned with personal stories\, menus\, and family photos\, Old Farm Country Cookbook recalls a time when electricity had not yet found its way to the farm\, when making sauerkraut was a family endeavor\, and when homemade ice cream tasted better than anything you could buy at the store. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: For hours and other admission information\, please contact the hosting venue. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan Apps-Bodilly\, author of Seeds in Soil: Planting a Garden and Finding Your Roots and One Room Schools: Stories from the Days of 1 Room\, 1 Teacher\, 8 Grades and co-author of Old Farm Country Cookbook: Recipes\, Menus\, and Memories\, worked as an elementary and middle school teacher for more than twenty years and recently retired from teaching second-grade students. SUMMARY:Wisconsin Book Festival - Liam Callanan discusses Stone Age Astronaut: The Astonishing Adventures of America's Forgotten Flier
DESCRIPTION:The Wisconsin Book Festival welcomes author Liam Callanan\, discussing his new biography of aviation pioneer Lester Maitland\n\n\n\nIn conversation with Jeff Oloizia \n\n\n\nIn Stone Age Astronaut\, Liam Callanan uncovers the astonishing life of Lester Maitland\, the Milwaukee-born aviator who\, in 1927\, became the first person to fly to Hawaii\, earning national acclaim on par with Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic triumph. But while Lindbergh’s legacy grew\, Maitland’s all but vanished. With sparkling prose and a storyteller’s instinct for detail\, Callanan resurrects a man whose life intersected with major events\, eras\, and personalities\, but who has inexplicably slipped through the cracks of American memory. A gripping portrait of ambition\, innovation\, fame\, failure\, and reinvention – and the enduring human urge to fly – Stone Age Astronaut ensures that Lester Maitland’s extraordinary story will no longer be forgotten. \n\n\n\nLiam Callanan is the author of four novels and a collection of stories. He’s won the Edna Ferber Prize\, his writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal\, The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, and more\, and he has recorded numerous essays for public radio. He has taught at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Liam lives in Milwaukee\, five blocks from where Lester Maitland grew up.Presented in partnership with the Wisconsin Science Festival. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket/Registration Info\n\n\n\nFREE and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Wisconsin Book Festival\n\n\n\nThe 25th Annual Wisconsin Book Festival Fall Celebration returns October 15-18!
