SUMMARY:An Indigenous History of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Want to get involved in celebrating America 250?\n\n\n\nIndigenous people were central players in the American revolution. For instance\, Native nations were both allied and opposed to the Patriot’s cause. The Declaration of Independence cited Native people as one of the twenty seven reasons justifying the revolution. In fact\, Native nations offered the founders concrete inspiration for the democratic nature of the new United States. Despite this\, many histories of the nation’s founding still leave Native communities on the margin of the story. In this talk\, we’ll explore an Indigenous history of the American Revolution\, a story which has shaped the many nations which today call Wisconsin home. \n\n\n\nThis program is part of Beyond 250\, a series highlighting US history. Find the full program schedule at www.beyondthepage.info/beyond-250 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the presenter:\n\n\n\nMatt Villeneuve (Turtle Mountain Chippewa descent) is Assistant Professor of U.S. History and Native American and Indigenous Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \n\n\n\n\n\nNote: For hours and other admission information\, please contact the hosting venue. \n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n Add to calendar \n \n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Google Calendar \n \n \n \n iCalendar \n \n \n \n Outlook 365 \n \n \n \n Outlook Live \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nFind more events\, resources\, and opportunities to connect here: \n\n\n\n\nCelebrate the 250th – WisHistory\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: For hours and other admission information\, please contact the hosting venue. \n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n Add to calendar \n \n	\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Google Calendar \n \n \n \n iCalendar \n \n \n \n Outlook 365 \n \n \n \n Outlook Live

Hercules L. Dousman began development of the site during the 1840s on the banks of the Mississippi River in Prairie du Chien. The property has since expanded into a 25-acre complex complete with historic structures and archaeological remains that reference the early history of the site. Upon the death of Hercules in 1868\, widow Jane Dousman and son H. Louis Dousman contracted Milwaukee architect E. Townsend Mix to build the stately mansion that now rests at the heart of the property.  In addition to the new residence\, H. Louis expanded the site to include a farm for breeding and racing horses.  After Louis’ death\, Nina Dousman raised their children at Villa Louis\, and the property remained under family ownership until it was given to the City of Prairie du Chien in 1935. In 1950\, Villa Louis became property of the Wisconsin Historical Society and opened to the public in 1952.    \n \nPrior to Dousman ownership\, Indigenous natives lived on the Villa Louis grounds over 2000 years ago. For centuries\, Native Nations of the upper Mississippi gathered upon the island to trade among themselves until the fur trade brought French-speaking traders in contact with Indigenous tribesmen and women. The trade also attracted free Black settlers to Prairie du Chien. Additionally\, officers and agents of the United States brought enslaved men and women to the prairie\, some of whom lived at Fort Crawford and other structures that once stood on land that is now part of Villa Louis State Historic Site. Research and restorations continue to fully expand the story of these early residents and events.   \nVilla Louis Historic Site  \n(PO Box 65)  \n521 Villa Louis Road  \nPrairie du Chien\, WI 53821-0065  \n  \nKnow Before You Go & Accessibility  \n \n\n \n\n \n\nFor guests interested in touring the Villa Louis mansion\, tickets will be available at an additional cost.\nThe museum store is open daily during business hours. \nGuests may exit and return throughout the day to explore the grounds. \nWater is the only outside food/beverage allowed. SUMMARY:Laura Kostelnik Biskupic discusses Lambeau Ladies
DESCRIPTION:Brookfield Public Library welcomes author Laura Kostenik Biskupic and special guest Peggy Kostelnik\, discussing the extraordinary women who helped build a Packers dynasty\n\n\n\nLong before NFL players had teams of trainers\, nutritionists\, and agents tending to their every need\, the dynastic Green Bay Packers of the 1960s relied on a different kind of support staff: their wives. SUMMARY:Author Aurore Sibley\, in conversation with David Luhrssen\, discusses Some Things Don't Burn: Art\, Activism\, and Arson at the Bugle American
DESCRIPTION:Boswell Book Company welcomes Aurore Sibley\, discussing her new book on Milwaukee’s legendary alternative newspaper\, the Bugle American\n\n\n\nFrom 1970 to 1978\, the Bugle American wasn’t just an alternative newspaper\, it was the sparkplug that propelled Milwaukee’s emergence as an influential cultural hub. On a cold February night in 1975\, a firebomb ripped through the Bugle American offices\, threatening lives and burning the building to the ground. The crime was never solved. But the paper rose from the ashes to publish the very next week. In Some Things Don’t Burn\, Aurore Sibley tells the full story of this influential underground paper: its founding ideals\, its creative energy\, its brushes with fame\, and its lasting impact. \n\n\n\nAurore Sibley is a writer\, educator\, musician\, and Wisconsin native. She’s also the daughter of former Bugle American arts and entertainment editor Gary Peterson and contributing writer Joyce Rodgers. Her poetry and prose have appeared in numerous publications\, including Midwestern Gothic\, and she is the author of two poetry collections.David Luhrssen is co-founder and Managing Editor of the Shepherd Express and has written numerous books on film\, music and other aspects of culture. At age 16 he got his first check for writing from the Bugle American. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket/Registration Info\n\n\n\nFREE and open to the public. SUMMARY:Liam Callanan discusses Stone Age Astronaut: The Astonishing Adventures of America's Forgotten Flyer
DESCRIPTION:Politics and Prose at The Wharf in Washington\, D.C. welcomes bestselling author Liam Callanan\, discussing his first work of nonfiction\, Stone Age Astronaut\n\n\n\nIn Stone Age Astronaut\, Callanan uncovers the astonishing life of Lester Maitland\, the Milwaukee-born aviator who\, in 1927\, became the first person to fly to Hawaii\, earning national acclaim on par with Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic triumph. But while Lindbergh’s legacy grew\, Maitland’s all but vanished. \n\n\n\nWith sparkling prose and a storyteller’s instinct for detail\, Callanan resurrects a man whose life intersected with major events\, eras\, and personalities\, but who has inexplicably slipped through the cracks of American memory. A gripping portrait of ambition\, innovation\, fame\, failure\, and reinvention – and the enduring human urge to fly – Stone Age Astronaut ensures that Lester Maitland’s extraordinary story will no longer be forgotten. \n\n\n\nLiam Callanan is author of four novels and a collection of stories. He’s won the Edna Ferber Prize\, his writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal\, The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, and more\, and he has recorded numerous essays for public radio. He has taught at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Liam lives in Milwaukee\, five blocks from where Lester Maitland grew up. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket/Registration Info\n\n\n\nFREE and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\nLearn more about this event\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

Their original collection of artifacts and texts has helped document centuries of island history\, while later additions and expansions to the museum paint an even richer\, deeper portrait of life on the Apostle Islands. The Ojibwe and other tribes made their home on Madeline Island\, the largest of the Apostle Islands\, for thousands of years before Europeans first made contact—in Ojibwe\, the island is named Mooningwanekaaning-minis\, which means island of the yellow-breasted woodpecker. Because of its strategic location and ample resources\, the island served as a trading center for millennia and later a reliable fur trading post\, missionary headquarters and commercial fishing zone for European settlers in the North American interior.    \n\n\n\nThe museum\, composed of four historic island structures and the modern Capser Center\, contains exhibits detailing Wisconsin history from 17th-century exploration and the era of the fur trade to the arrival of summer islanders\, in the early 20th century.  \n\n\n\nMadeline Island Historical Museum 226 Colonel Woods Ave La Pointe\, WI 54850  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKnow Before You Go\n\n\n\nGuests who make a purchase on the island can also pick up a complimentary return ferry ticket at the Madeline Island Museum. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue
