SUMMARY:Wisconsin Book Festival - Liam Callanan discusses Stone Age Astronaut: The Astonishing Adventures of America's Forgotten Flier
DESCRIPTION:The Wisconsin Book Festival welcomes author Liam Callanan\, discussing his new biography of aviation pioneer Lester Maitland\n\n\n\nIn conversation with Jeff Oloizia \n\n\n\nIn Stone Age Astronaut\, Liam Callanan uncovers the astonishing life of Lester Maitland\, the Milwaukee-born aviator who\, in 1927\, became the first person to fly to Hawaii\, earning national acclaim on par with Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic triumph. But while Lindbergh’s legacy grew\, Maitland’s all but vanished. With sparkling prose and a storyteller’s instinct for detail\, Callanan resurrects a man whose life intersected with major events\, eras\, and personalities\, but who has inexplicably slipped through the cracks of American memory. A gripping portrait of ambition\, innovation\, fame\, failure\, and reinvention – and the enduring human urge to fly – Stone Age Astronaut ensures that Lester Maitland’s extraordinary story will no longer be forgotten. \n\n\n\nLiam Callanan is the author of four novels and a collection of stories. He’s won the Edna Ferber Prize\, his writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal\, The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, and more\, and he has recorded numerous essays for public radio. He has taught at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Liam lives in Milwaukee\, five blocks from where Lester Maitland grew up.Presented in partnership with the Wisconsin Science Festival. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket/Registration Info\n\n\n\nFREE and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Wisconsin Book Festival\n\n\n\nThe 25th Annual Wisconsin Book Festival Fall Celebration returns October 15-18! SUMMARY:Residents of “Wisconsin” in the Revolutionary War with Mary Elise Antoine
DESCRIPTION:Join Mary Elise Antoine for this special America 250 event on the Wisconsin residents who fought in the Revolutionary War\n\n\n\nMichel Charles de Langlade and his family had been living at la Baye for less than ten years when British soldiers and colonists exchanged musket fire on Lexington green. Within a year\, Michel and the Native nations of the western Great Lakes-upper Mississippi region\, with whom he and other Canadians traded\, were drawn into the conflict to determine whether Great Britain’s North American colonies would gain independence from the rule of Parliament and King George. \n\n\n\nFrom the Continental Army’s invasion of Canada in 1775 to Great Britain’s plan in 1780 to capture St. Louis and regain the Illinois County\, residents of what is now Wisconsin participated in the Thirteen Colonies’ war for independence. \n\n\n\nMary Elise Antoine will explain how Canadians and Native people of the western Great Lakes-upper Mississippi region were part of the American Revolution\, who participated and why they fought\, the results of the battles in which they fought\, and the effect of the war in what is now Wisconsin. \n\n\n\nMary Elise Antoine\, author of Enslaved\, Indentured\, Free: Five Black Women on the Upper Mississippi\, 1800-1850 and The War of 1812 in Wisconsin: The Battle for Prairie du Chien\, is the former curator of Villa Louis. Her research focuses on the material culture and mix and confrontation of cultures on the upper Mississippi prior to Wisconsin statehood. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket/Registration Info\n\n\n\nFREE and open to the public \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more about this event\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

DESCRIPTION:Chippewa Valley Book Festival welcomes Pao Lor\, author of the acclaimed memoirs Modern Jungles and Bamboo Son\n\n\n\nDrawing on his lived experience\, Dr. Pao Lor offers insight into how the Hmong people moved from an intricate\, sophisticated\, and vulnerable culture in the isolated highlands of Laos in the 1960s and 1970s to becoming part of the American and global landscape. SUMMARY:Spiritualism in the Victorian Era
DESCRIPTION:Event Details \n \nSelect Fridays | 7 PM–8:30 PM Oct 2\, Oct 9\, Oct 23\, 2026 \n \nA Night of Thrills\, Chills and Brewing Tycoon History   \nInterest in spiritualism surged in America during the mid to late 1800s\, as people sought ways to connect with deceased friends and loved ones in the “Great Beyond.” What better place to explore this paranormal proclivity than in the elegant dining room of a Queen Anne style mansion built in 1888 by Chicago beer tycoon Conrad Seipp? \n \nSip on a delectable cordial and hear tales of the Fox sisters\, credited with the creation of the spiritualist movement in America\, and learn about Wisconsin’s connection to the movement\, including Whitewater’s Morris Pratt Institute\, the country’s first spiritualist school. More than an occult parlor game\, spiritualism was a social and religious movement that claimed to channel the voices of the dead\, link the present with the past\, and conjure new worldly and otherworldly futures. This event provides attendees the chance to enjoy the estate after dark.  \n \nWhat You’ll Experience \n\nStories of the Fox sisters\, who helped create the spiritualist movement in America\nThe history behind Wisconsin’s connection to Victorian spiritualism\nA tasty cordial to sip while enjoying the splendor of Black Point Estate after dark\n\nCost \n$75/person \nAdvance registration required. Guests must be 13+.Society members receive a 10% discount\, please verify your membership where prompted to receive discount at check out. \n \nAbout the Location \nBuilt in 1888 as a retreat for Chicago Beer Baron Conrad Seipp\, Black Point Estate has persisted through the centuries as a historic place to relax\, refresh\, and explore the banks of Geneva Lake and beyond. Much like the Victorian VIPs who originally established the estate\, visitors can enjoy the cool lake breezes on the grand veranda\, sip Seipp beer\, and listen to the soothing melodies of the authentic 1911 Chickering piano that rests just inside. SUMMARY:Chippewa Valley Book Festival - Jerome Poling discusses American Birkebeiner: The Nation's Greatest Ski Marathon
DESCRIPTION:Chippewa Valley Book Festival welcomes author Jerome Poling\, sharing the history of the famed American Birkebeiner\, North America’s premier cross-country skiing event\n\n\n\nThe American Birkebeiner between Hayward and Cable\, Wis.\, is North America’s largest cross-country ski marathon and one of the largest in the world\, with more than 10\,000 competitors annually. How did founder Tony Wise fuel its rise from humble beginnings\, with just 54 skiers in 1973? What keeps skiers\, from weekend warriors to Olympians\, coming back each February despite the extreme\, 30-plus-mile challenge through the snow and hills of northern Wisconsin? Attendees will be inspired by the fascinating history of the Birkebeiner and its visionary founder — one man’s dream that became the pride of two communities and the talk of the Nordic ski world — as well as the spirit of the race. \n\n\n\nJournalist and author Jerome “Jerry” P. Poling has skied more than twenty-five American Birkebeiners and has reported on the race for nearly forty years.
