DESCRIPTION:Chippewa Valley Book Festival welcomes author Jerome Poling\, sharing the history of the famed American Birkebeiner\, North America’s premier cross-country skiing event\n\n\n\nThe American Birkebeiner between Hayward and Cable\, Wis.\, is North America’s largest cross-country ski marathon and one of the largest in the world\, with more than 10\,000 competitors annually. Poling has skied more than twenty-five American Birkebeiners and has reported on the race for nearly forty years. He has published four other books\, including two on the Green Bay Packers\, one on Henry Aaron\, and one on the history of the University of Wisconsin at Stout. Hercules L. Dousman began development of the site during the 1840s on the banks of the Mississippi River in Prairie du Chien. The property has since expanded into a 25-acre complex complete with historic structures and archaeological remains that reference the early history of the site. Upon the death of Hercules in 1868\, widow Jane Dousman and son H. Louis Dousman contracted Milwaukee architect E. Townsend Mix to build the stately mansion that now rests at the heart of the property.  In addition to the new residence\, H. Louis expanded the site to include a farm for breeding and racing horses.  After Louis’ death\, Nina Dousman raised their children at Villa Louis\, and the property remained under family ownership until it was given to the City of Prairie du Chien in 1935. In 1950\, Villa Louis became property of the Wisconsin Historical Society and opened to the public in 1952.    \n \nPrior to Dousman ownership\, Indigenous natives lived on the Villa Louis grounds over 2000 years ago. For centuries\, Native Nations of the upper Mississippi gathered upon the island to trade among themselves until the fur trade brought French-speaking traders in contact with Indigenous tribesmen and women. The trade also attracted free Black settlers to Prairie du Chien. Additionally\, officers and agents of the United States brought enslaved men and women to the prairie\, some of whom lived at Fort Crawford and other structures that once stood on land that is now part of Villa Louis State Historic Site. Research and restorations continue to fully expand the story of these early residents and events.   \nVilla Louis Historic Site  \n(PO Box 65)  \n521 Villa Louis Road  \nPrairie du Chien\, WI 53821-0065  \n \nKnow Before You Go \n \n\n \n\n \n\nDoors to this free experience open at 1:30 PM. SUMMARY:Great Lakes Small Streams: How Water Shapes Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:Explore this water-themed traveling display that showcases Wisconsin’s long relationship with water and the impact we have had on our waterways.\n\n\n\nIt is impossible to fully understand Wisconsin – its history\, culture and prospects for the future – without an appreciation of water’s power to create opportunities\, influence decisions and shape the events that become our shared story. To experience and fully appreciate life in Wisconsin today\, and to make decisions that will chart the course of our future\, it is essential for Wisconsin residents and students to understand the historical role water played to shape our land\, economy\, culture and spirit.  \n\n\n\nThe exhibit will teach audiences about our relationship with water as a state. The exhibit will place many of our current concerns in a historical context and show how our state was changed over time by the force of water. Visitors will see the consequences—good and bad—of past decisions and will be challenged to incorporate insights they gain into actions that can secure a more hopeful future for all of us regarding water. \n\n\n\n\n\n“Great Lakes Small Streams” on display at Wade House\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Wisconsin Historical Society gratefully acknowledges the Herzfeld Foundation\, Wisconsin Humanities Council\, and Ralph Evinrude Foundation for their generous support of this exhibit. \n\n\n\nNote: For hours and other admission information\, please contact the hosting venue. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Wisconsin History Makers Tour will bring history directly to local communities in every region of the state through pop-up exhibits\, object displays\, public programs\, outdoor installations\, and other activities.  \n\n\n\nThe History Makers Tour is presented by Culver’s and is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services\, Grant Number: MA-253159-OMS-23.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue
